Illinois — Sales And Use Tax — Chicago parking and hotel taxes.
The Chicago Department of Revenue revised a recent letter to parking lot operators and hotels announcing changes affecting Chicago taxes in 2012. The budget includes a “congestion fee” increase in the daily, weekly and monthly parking tax rates. Effective January 1, 2012, the fee imposed on the top daily tier, when the weekday daily rate is $12 or greater, will be $5 per day. The weekend daily rates remain unchanged. The City parking tax imposed on weekly parking will increase to $25 when the weekly rate is $60 or greater and the monthly taxes are as follows: if the monthly parking rate is $40.01 - $99.99, the tax is $20; if the monthly parking rate is $100 - $239.99, the tax is $35; if the monthly rate is $240 - $299.99, the parking tax is $90; if the monthly rate is $300 - $399.99, the parking tax is $110; and if the monthly rate is $400 or more, the parking tax is $120. For examples of how the parking tax will apply in various situations, see Chicago Dept. of Revenue Informational Bulletin 1, 12/01/2011 . Also effective January 1, 2012, the hotel accommodations tax will also increase from a rate of 3.5% to a rate of 4.5%. The City's annual tax return for both taxes will be a “split” return with one covering the period of July 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011, and a second return covering January 1, 2012 through June 30, 2012. The tax returns will be available later in 2012 and are not due until August 15, 2012. A taxpayer's monthly periodic tax payment due dates will remain unchanged, but the January 2012 deposit that is due February 15, 2012 would include taxes collected at these new rates.
